by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Office of Diversity and Equity at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is sponsoring a series of Brown Bag Difference Dialogues for all University faculty and staff.

There will be one event each month from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Center's Kaskaskia Room. The dates for the remainder of 2012 are Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13. The spring 2013 dates include Jan. 17, Feb. 14, March 21 and April 11.

The discussions will offer strategies and support to promote cross-cultural acceptance, overcome resistance to differences and encourage success among the diverse campus student population. Dialogue topics include excellence, bias, stereotypes, diversity, success, access, inclusion, resistance, equity, belonging and understanding.

Faculty, teaching assistants and graduate assistants will find the discussions helpful in fostering understanding and academic success among their students, and Civil Service employees will learn skills to enhance their professional development and success in a diverse environment.

Participants may bring their lunches and enjoy this time of interaction, sharing desserts, drinks and dialogue. For more information about the brown bag series or the Office of Diversity and Equity, call 618/453-4807, email diversity@siu.edu or visit the website at www.ode.siu.edu
