Media Advisory -- School of Music Camps

Reporters, photographers and news crews looking for fine arts activities in the summer can get their fill at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Music summer camps.  The University offers five “band” camps and guitar camp June 17-22.  All five camps culminate in a free, public performance at Shryock Auditorium beginning at 4 p.m. on June 22.  Members of the media who would like access to the camps during rehearsals or master classes can find details here:

High School Band Camp is open to students who will be in high school during the 2012-2013 academic year.  Participants may live on campus during the camp, or may commute.  In addition to master classes and ensemble rehearsal, students learn music theory and musicianship.  Competitive auditions and prior experience influence “seating” of students, with the honor of “first chair” as the prize.  Contact Christopher Morehouse, assistant professor and director of bands at SIU Carbondale, at 618/453-5813 or cmoreh@siu.edu

Junior High School Band Camp is similar to the High School Band Camp, but is for students who will be in seventh or eighth grade during the 2012-2013 academic year.  Contact Jim Childers, director of the Marion Junior High School Band, at 618/536-8742.

Jazz Improvisation Camp is open to young musicians who play brass, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, or drums, and have an interest in jazz.  The camp is similar in structure to the band camps, but includes lessons in improvisation, often a new concept for young musicians.  Contact Richard Kelley, conductor and SIU Carbondale lecturer in saxophone and jazz studies, at 618/536-8742 or kelley2@siu.edu.

Drum Major camp is open to students who are drum majors, drum line or color guard, and will be in high school in the academic year 2012-2013.  Whole drum lines may wish to participate as a group, or individuals may elect to attend.  The camp includes a look at contemporary field conducting techniques and music score study, as well as topics including dynamic leadership techniques and the role of the drum major in a marching band.  Contact George Brozak, director of athletic bands and assistant director of bands at SIU Carbondale, at 618/453-5838 or gbrozak@siu.edu.

Marching Percussion Camp is open to individual drummers or to entire drum lines who will be in high school during the academic year 2012-2013.  The camp includes such topics as playing fundamentals, music reading skills, band musicianship, and cadences.  Contact George Brozak, director of athletic bands and assistant director of bands at SIU Carbondale, at 618/453-5838 or gbrozak@siu.edu

Guitar Camp continues the tradition of the guitar seminar hosted at SIU Carbondale for decades.  The camp is open to all levels, from beginning to advanced and of all ages.  Students learn classical guitar techniques, chords, music reading, and more.  Contact Joseph Palermo, SIU Carbondale alumnus and lecturer in guitar, at 618/536-8742.
