Daily Egyptian honors eight staff members

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Daily Egyptian, the student newspaper at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, honored eight staff members recently for their contributions to the award-winning publication’s success.

Staff members received the honors during the annual School of Journalism and Daily Egyptian Scholarships and Awards Ceremony, April 15.

The paper publishes five days a week when classes are in session in the fall and spring semesters, and three days a week during the summer semester.  The newspaper circulates about 20,000 copies on campus and throughout surrounding communities.  It employs more than 70 students, including journalists, photojournalists, advertising sales and production and business office workers.

Here is a list of those receiving recognition.

Illinois

Beecher:  Lisa Cole, DE Outstanding Advertising Rookie of the Year. She is a senior in business management, and has been a sales representative with the newspaper since fall 2011.

Carbondale: Leah Stover, DE Outstanding Newsroom Senior of the Year.  She worked in a variety of positions at the newspaper, serving as a campus and city reporter, along with editor-in-chief and sports editor.  Stover graduates this year with a degree in journalism, specializing in advertising/integrated marketing communications.

Edwardsville:  Steve Matzger, DE Outstanding Newsroom Rookie of the Year.  He is a senior majoring in photojournalism.  He has been on the photo staff since summer 2011.

Flora:  Genna Ord, DE Outstanding Newsroom Senior of the Year.  Ord is the newspaper’s editor-in-chief.  She is a senior majoring in photojournalism.

Glen Carbon:  Tara Kulash, DE Outstanding Newsroom Rookie of the Year.  She is the newspaper’s campus editor.  She is a senior majoring in news-editorial and creative writing.

LaGrange Park:  Chris Dorris, Best Supporting Role.  He is a senior in the accountancy program, and will begin this summer in the SIU Carbondale Master of Accountancy program in the College of Business.  He has been with the newspaper’s business office since April 2011.

Murphysboro:  Isaac Smith, DE Outstanding Newsroom Senior of the Year.  Smith is a senior majoring in photojournalism.

Naperville:  Sara Berke, DE Advertising Outstanding Senior.  Berke graduated this past weekend with bachelor’s degrees in sociology and journalism.
