Cooperative Youth Conference is June 7-8

by Michelle Winkler

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Division of Continuing Education along with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Illinois Cooperative Council are presenting the 2012 Cooperative Youth Conference June 7 and 8.

The conference provides high school juniors and seniors an exciting yet educational opportunity to learn about cooperatives through hands-on activities.  Participants will go on a field trip to see local cooperatives in action.  They’ll also attend workshops where experienced employees of cooperatives will provide them with insight into the important qualities and facets of various types of cooperatives.

The Cooperative Youth Conference will take place on the SIU Carbondale campus beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, and conclude at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8. Participants must pay a $30 deposit to hold their spot.  They will get the deposit back when they attend the conference, as participation is free courtesy of sponsorships from cooperatives and county Farm Bureaus.

If you are a member of a cooperative or County Farm Bureau that values young people in our area and wishes to support an educational opportunity for future consumers and members, contact Jackie Welch at 618/536-7751 regarding sponsoring students for the conference.  Individual sponsorships are $100 per conference attendee.
