Cinema and Photography students honored
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Nineteen outstanding students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Department of Cinema and Photography recently earned scholarships and received awards for the 2011-2012 academic year.
The department is within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. The scholarships and awards total $8,300.
Here is a list of scholarship winners, by hometown. Where available, the listing contains the winner’s name, year in school, major, scholarship name, the amount, and a bit of background on the award.
Illinois
Carbondale: Hannah Bushur, freshman, photography. Photography Production Award, $300. The award goes to a student for outstanding accomplishment in photography in the past year.
Carbondale: Lauren Stoelzle, graduated in December 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in cinema and photography. Cinema Outstanding Scholar Award, $300. The award goes to a cinema student for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the past year.
Carterville: Caitlin Walls, senior, photography. Mary Green Memorial Award, $300. The award honors Mary Green, a photography student killed in a car accident while on her way home for the Thanksgiving Holiday in 1986, and goes to a student for outstanding accomplishment in photography. The department selected Walls with the same sort of energy, spirit and inventiveness that Green exemplified in her years as a student.
Centralia: Nathan Fortmeyer, senior, photography. Photography Studies Award, $300. The award is given to an outstanding student for scholarly studies in the area of photography. Fortmeyer has a previous degree in criminology and criminal justice from SIU Carbondale.
Downers Grove: Matthew Wozniak, junior, cinema. Robert Dennis Filmmaking Award, $950. Established by Robert Dennis, an alumnus of the Department of Cinema and Photography, the award is given to an outstanding student filmmaker for accomplishment in cinematography in the past year.
Evanston: Gabrielle Moloney, senior, cinema. John C. Mercer Memorial Award, $200. The award goes to an outstanding cinema student for their work in the past year, and honors the professor and founder of the University’s cinema program.
Hawthorn Woods: Robert Bachman, junior, photography. David Gilmore Award, $450. The award goes to an outstanding photography student in the past year, and honors David Gilmore, a former department chair, who taught in the department for 32 years.
Herrin: Casey Lambert, senior, cinema. Cinema Production Award, $300. The award goes to an outstanding student in film production. Lambert also has a previous degree in administration of justice from SIU Carbondale.
Iuka: Laura Partain, senior, photography. Charles Swedlund Award, $450. Established in honor of former professor Charles Swedlund, who taught at SIU Carbondale for 30 years. The award goes to an outstanding photography student.
Lake Zurich: Ryan Gorey, freshman, photography. C. William Horrell Memorial Scholarship, $300. The award honors C. William Horrell, long-time faculty member and photography program founder.
Mount Vernon: Cassie Porter, junior, photography. Paul Harum Memorial Award, $300. Established in honor of Paul Harum, a photography student at SIU Carbondale who died in a motorcycle accident. The award was established in 1987, and goes to an undergraduate photography student who has shown great potential in the program.
Oswego: Daniel Bowling, senior, photography. Kodak Professional Imaging Award, $750. Presented to an outstanding student based on academic and professional excellence in the past year. Bowling is also majoring in industrial technology.
South Holland: Saudia Malicott, sophomore, cinema. Minority Filmmaker Scholarship, $300. Established by 1984 SIU Carbondale Cinema and Photography graduate and Academy Award nominee Steve James, the award goes to an outstanding minority student whose work in the last year shows significant promise.
Springfield: Sam Phillippe senior, photography. Kodak Professional Imaging Award, $750.
Winfield: Robert Kohler, senior, cinema. Loren Cocking Animation Award, $200. Established in honor of Loren Cocking, who taught film production and animation courses at the University from 1976 through 2002, the award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for accomplishment in animation in the past year.
West Frankfort: Logan Randolph, senior, radio-television. Loren Cocking Animation Award, $200.
Indiana
Danville: Nathan Gillock, graduated December 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in cinema and photography. Liz Ralston Cinema Production Award, $750. Established by SIU Carbondale cinema alumnus Liz Ralston, the award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for innovative accomplishment in the past year. Ralston is currently executive producer for CIS Visual Effects Group in Hollywood, Calif.
Kentucky
Louisville: Susan Shircliff, senior, cinema. John C. Mercer Memorial Award, $200. The award goes for outstanding work in film production. Shircliff also has a bachelor’s degree in advertising from Murray State University.
Missouri
Webster Groves: Zachary Solomon, graduated May 2011 with a degree in cinema and photography. Richard Blumenberg Screenwriting Award, $1,000. The award honors the late Richard Blumenberg, a former professor in screenwriting in the department. The award is the result of a script competition where students submit feature-length scripts for judging by industry professionals. Solomon is currently pursuing another degree in English education at SIU Carbondale, and earned a bachelor’s degree in literature in December 2011 from SIU Carbondale.
