Students can enter Purchase Awards competition

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Student Programming Council Visual Arts and the Student Center are presenting the 34th Annual Purchase Awards competition at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Any University student may submit up to two entries on April 23 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Ballroom D on the second floor of the Student Center.  Creative works can be paintings, ceramics or any other type of media.  The only requirement is that the artisans must be SIU Carbondale students and that all entries must be their own, original works.

A faculty/staff committee will judge the submissions that afternoon, choosing those that will be part of the 2012 Purchase Awards display.  Everyone can see the selected pieces in Art Alley on the second floor of the Student Center from April 27 through May 11.  Artists may pick up items not chosen for the display between 4 and 5:30 p.m. on April 23.

A reception is set for 5 p.m. April 27 in the Student Center’s Art Alley.  At about 5:30 p.m., the big announcement will reveal who created the one or two artistic creations that the Student Center is purchasing for display in the center’s permanent art collection.  Artists who created the other pieces featured in the Purchase Awards show will receive certificates.

For more information, call 618/536-3393 or visit the University Programming Office on the third floor of the Student Center.  You can also find rules and entry information online at www.spc4fun.com.
