Bowling event will support new food pantry

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students and their children can participate in an afternoon of bowling fun to benefit a good cause on April 1.

The Office of Non-Traditional Student Services is sponsoring a Saluki Family Bowling event beginning at 2 p.m. at the Student Center’s Bowling and Billiards.  Admission is just $1 per person to cover the shoe rental and each person should also bring a canned good or other non-perishable food or toiletry item.  The donations will go to the new Wesley Foundation Food Pantry, which provides food and toiletries for SIU Carbondale students.  The Pantry is located at 816 S. Illinois Ave., next to Quigley Hall.

“This is a great opportunity for students to have fun, get to know other non-traditional students and support a great cause all at the same time.  We are excited to support the food pantry, newly established by students for students,” said Deborah Barnett, coordinator of Non-Traditional Student Services/Single Parent Programs.

Barnett notes that more than 7,000 students at SIU Carbondale in one way or another fit the definition of “non-traditional,” in that they are financially independent, delayed enrollment in college rather than entering immediately after high school, are returning to the higher education ranks after being away, attending college part-time, have children, are commuting to college, are a veteran, or are married, widowed or divorced.

“Although the bowling event will be a fun afternoon for students to share with their children, we invite all students to come and join in the fun and support the food pantry,” Barnett said.

Space is limited for the Saluki Family Bowling event so sign up early online at www.nontrad.siu.edu or by calling the office at 618/453-7521.
