Transfer Day offers introduction to University

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale presents Transfer Day, 2012, a college preview day designed specifically as an introduction to the University for community college students who want to pursue a four-year degree, and for students from other institutions who’d like to investigate SIU Carbondale.

The event is April 13 at the Student Recreation Center.  Check-in and campus tours begin at 8 a.m., and the event concludes at 1 p.m.

“Transfer students have particular needs when they come into a four-year program from a community college or from another college,” Katharine Suski, interim director of undergraduate admissions, said.  “They have some experience of what college life is, and some informed expectations of what it should be for them, and yet they are new students.  This event will help them see how easily they can fit in at SIU Carbondale, and it also answers some nuts-and-bolts questions about financial aid and the transfer process.”

Students will be able to peruse an information fair, or attend workshops detailing financial aid options, the University Honors Program, and how to read their transfer credit evaluations.  Representatives from Career Services will also be on hand to explain what they can do to help students find their career paths.  Campus and residence hall tours, along with a free residence hall dining lunch, round out the day’s activities.

Students who know they want to attend SIU Carbondale or who think they might should register by April 11.  They can do so by calling Amber Short at 618/453-2988 or emailing ashort@siu.edu.
