Greek organizations, members win honors
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently honored its Greek organizations and members for academic achievement, service and programming at the 81st Annual Greek Awards.
The Inter-Greek Council Awards included the presentation of the Betty Lou Mitchell Scholarship to two Greek students. Steven Ebers of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and Janelle Medernach of Sigma Kappa Sorority each received $1,500 scholarships. The SIU Foundation awards the Betty Mitchell Endowed Scholarship each year to one or more full-time students with a GPA of at least 3.5 who, while a member of a Pan-Hellenic campus group, demonstrates leadership and involvement in campus, community and Greek activities. The late Mitchell was a long-time faulty member and Alpha Gamma Delta adviser who was a member of the sorority as a student.
Ebers, of Cutler, is a junior biological sciences major. Medernach, of Morton, is a senior majoring in human nutrition and dietetics.
Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity earned recognition as the most improved chapter while Sigma Kappa Sorority took top chapter honors with the highest Greek score. Also honored for achieving Gold Level status by meeting 90 percent or more of the Greek standards as a chapter were Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Delta Zeta Sorority, Sigma Alpha Sorority, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority and Sigma Kappa Sorority.
Overall winners for academic programming were Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Delta Zeta Sorority and Sigma Kappa Sorority. Also earning gold level status were Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority.
Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and Sigma Kappa Sorority took top honors for recruitment and retention. Gold level honor recognition also went to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Chi Sigma Chi Fraternity, Delta Zeta Sorority, Delta Chi Fraternity, Delta Zeta Sorority, Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Sorority, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Taking the overall winner spots for chapter operations were hi Sigma Chi Fraternity, Delta Zeta Sorority and Sigma Kappa Sorority. Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and Sigma Alpha Sorority also earned gold level status.
Evaluations and scores for the spring and fall 2011 semesters determine the 2011 Inter-Greek Council Awards recipients.
