Bus will take volunteers to Harrisburg Saturday

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU Carbondale has arranged for a bus to take students and others interested in helping with the Harrisburg cleanup on Saturday, March 3.  Volunteers should be at the front entrance of the Student Center at 6:40 a.m. The bus will depart soon after, as the Disaster Relief Center in Harrisburg will begin assigning teams at 8 a.m.

The bus will take volunteers to the Disaster Coordinating Center, 540 N. Commercial St., in Harrisburg.  Every volunteer must sign in and get a pass; please bring a valid photo ID with you.  This allows the coordinating center to send teams to specific areas to ensure safety and maintain contact.

The Red Cross asks all volunteers to wear sturdy shoes and work gloves, and to bring their own bottled water.

A second clean-up shift will begin in Harrisburg at 1 p.m. Saturday. However, the University’s bus will only take people for the morning shift.  The bus will return to Carbondale about 1 p.m.
