Symphony presents ‘An Afternoon of Enchantment’

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra would like Little Mermaids, Caribbean pirates and students from Hogwarts to attend its next performance.

“An Afternoon of Enchantment” begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.  This performance includes vocalists from the musical theater program and dancers from the Creative Dance Workshop.

The music may be familiar even to young listeners.  The program includes movie music from such film series as “Star Wars,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Lord of the Rings,” and “Harry Potter.”  Music from “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Wizard of Oz,” is included as well.

The symphony will be “suitably attired” for an afternoon of enchantment, but the audience is invited to deepen the magic by coming in costume as well.  All children dressed in costume and accompanied by an adult get in free.

Come early for face-painting, jewelry-making and other kid-friendly activities presented by Sigma Alpha Iota, a music sorority at SIU Carbondale.

Tickets are $20 for the general public and $8 for students.  Tickets are available at the door before the performance, or in advance at Southern Tickets Online at www.SouthernTicketsOnline.com or 618/453-6000.
