Craft Shop offers ‘Whole Violin Experience’

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Student Center Craft Shop is offering a unique opportunity for people to participate in the “Whole Violin Experience” and there are two scholarships available.

The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday, Feb. 29 through April 25, with no class on March 14.

The workshop offers basic instructions for making and playing a violin.  Regardless of if you plan to build a violin from a kit, repair or refinish an existing instrument, or make modifications to improve sound and quality, you’ll find this workshop informative.  You can learn about where to get supplies, kits or violins in the white.  You will also get beginning instruction as well, learning how to set up a violin and make it sing.  Viola and cellos are welcome too.  Ryan Hesketh and Ron Dunkel will provide instruction for the complete violin experience.

The cost is $45 for SIU Carbondale students or $45 for anyone else.  That doesn’t include the cost of materials, as that will incur an extra expense.  You must register in advance and there must be at least six but no more than 12 in the class.

To sign up, call the craft shop at 618/453-3636, email craftshp@siu.edu or visit the website at http://www.siucstudentcenter.org/craft-shop.

In addition, the Carbondale Morning Etude Club has donated funds for two $75 scholarships for the workshop.  The need-based awards will cover the workshop tuition and some funding for an instrument to work on. For more information about the scholarships and applying, contact the Craft Shop.
