University to host commencement ceremonies
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Commencement exercises for fall 2011 graduates at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17.
Ceremonies are at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. There are 1,713 candidates for degrees, including of 1,419 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, 227 candidates for master’s degrees, 33 candidates for doctoral degrees, 24 candidates for law degrees, and 10 candidates for associate degrees.

Reporters, photographers and camera crews are welcome to attend the commencement ceremonies. There are no keynote speakers for either ceremony.
Graduate school students will participate in the ceremony of their individual academic unit.
Commencement ceremonies are open to the public, and tickets are not required.
Nuruddin Farah, an internationally recognized Somali novelist and playwright, will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during commencement ceremonies for the College of Liberal Arts. A past nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature, Farah’s first novel, “From a Crooked Rib,” published in 1970, gained international attention for its strong critique of repression experienced by women in Somali society.
Farah’s novels grapple with the social and political problems that face his people in Somalia. His 11th novel, “Crossbones,” was published earlier this fall. Farah has returned to Somalia several times since the overthrow of dictator Siad Barre’s regime 20 years ago. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Farah is a Winton Chair in the Liberal Arts in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota.

Saturday, Dec. 17
9:30 a.m. – College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Applied Sciences and Arts, College of Business, and the College of Education and Human Services.
1:30 p.m. – School of Law, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, and the College of Science.
