School of Music presents weekend concerts

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Music at Southern Illinois University Carbondale presents two afternoon concerts this weekend -- providing a cultural respite from the hustle of the holidays.

First up is the annual Southern Illinois Children’s Choir concert, beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Epiphany Lutheran Church (1501 W. Chautauqua St. in Carbondale).  The performance is free.

The Southern Illinois Children’s’ Choir, under the direction of Alice Berry, is part of the community outreach of the School of Music.  The choir is a long-standing tradition in Southern Illinois, and provides a meaningful connection to music for area children who love to sing.  The choir includes several components with membership arrayed by skill level and age.  Overall, the choir is open to children from 4 years old to those through their freshman year in high school.

The second weekend concert features the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society and special guest, pianist and SIU Carbondale keyboard area coordinator and associate professor Junghwa Lee.  This performance begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Unitarian Fellowship (105 N. Parrish Lane in Carbondale).  Tickets are $15, with student tickets at $5.  Proceeds directly benefit the School of Music for scholarships and other needs.
