Showcase to celebrate children, collect supplies

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Carbondale Youth Showcase, an event from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and the Speaking and Teaching registered student organization, will celebrate local children on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

The showcase, free and open to the public, is set for 6:11-9 p.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center Auditorium at 200 S. Illinois Ave.  Children from kindergarten through sixth grade from Carbondale elementary schools, churches and youth programs will be demonstrating their artistic talents.

In addition to showing appreciation for the local children and their talents, the Carbondale Youth Showcase is a school supply collection event.   While there is no cost to attend, organizers encourage audience members to bring assorted school supplies.  Event sponsors will distribute all of the donated supplies to local schools and after school programs.

All participants are winners in the Carbondale Youth Showcase.  Each group will get a certificate, special gift and trophy.  In addition, sponsors will be providing school supplies and snacks to the participants.

There is still time for participants to sign up for the second annual Carbondale Youth Showcase.  Organizers are encouraging group acts rather than single performers but all are welcome.  Showcase participants must call Byron Madison at 618/306-1893 or Ryan Reed at 773/575-3917 no later than Tuesday, Oct. 25, to register.

Reed, vice president of Speaking and Teaching and public relations director for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at SIU Carbondale, said the showcase is a great opportunity to recognize local children and provide area kids with needed school supplies to help them in their educational pursuits.

“Children are the future of our society, so let’s give back to them today for what they’ll do for us tomorrow,”  Reed said.
