Campus Safety Alert

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety is investigating a robbery and aggravated battery that occurred Saturday, Oct. 1, on the sidewalk in front of 615 S. Washington St.

The incident occurred at 1:15 a.m. and involved two 20-year-old SIU Carbondale students.  The victims each told police they were walking south on Washington Street when a group of five to eight people walking north approached them.

One of the victims was hit in the head as the two groups passed.  The man’s friend was also hit in the head when he went to assist his friend.  One of the victims had their wallet containing a small amount of money taken during the attack.

No descriptions are available on the suspects.

The two victims did not require medial treatment.

Police advise members of the campus community to be aware of their surroundings at all times, and if traveling at night to use the Saluki Express, Night Safety Transit Service and Brightway Path.  In addition, emergency call phones are located across campus, including on both overpasses.
