CARBONDALE, Ill. -- “I Am Rethinking Leadership,” an upcoming event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, offers student leaders the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills and share experiences with fellow students.

The 2011 Student Leadership Conference is set for Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Student Center Ballrooms and all SIUC students are welcome to attend.  The conference runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 30 and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.

“The conference is an excellent opportunity for student leaders or emerging leaders on campus.  We have an awesome keynote speaker and more than 25 workshops this year.  It’s a great way to network with other student leaders on campus and enhance the leadership qualities you have.  It’s definitely something you’re not going to want to miss,” said Caitlin Moliske, executive director of the 2011 SIU Student Leadership Conference and a junior physiology major from Taylorville.

Tyson Wooters, a popular motivational speaker, educator and consultant who promotes leadership development through humor, will present the keynote address.  He will discuss the power of claiming real accountability and ownership of every aspect of life.

The conference will also feature more than two dozen workshops covering topics as diverse as time management, gender and communication styles, universal leadership qualities, how to leave a lasting impression and much more.  Presenters are as diverse as the topics they’ll discuss.

The registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 26, and the cost is $5 per person.  The fee covers dinner, lunch and a T-shirt.  You can register at the Student Life and Intercultural Relations office on the third floor of the Student Center.

Student Involvement and Leadership Development, a unit of Student Life and Intercultural Relations, is guiding the student-led event.  Other sponsors include the colleges of Education and Human Services, Applied Sciences and Arts, Liberal Arts, Business, Science, Mass Communication and Media Arts, and Agricultural Sciences, along with the Black Togetherness Organization, Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, University Honors Program, SIU Alumni Association, Office of the Chancellor and Inter-Greek Council.
