CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Do you have what it takes?  Could you be the ultimate survivor?

Southern Illinois University Carbondale students interested in competing in the upcoming Ultimate Saluki Challenge can participate in a Preview Night event this week.  Ultimate Saluki Challenge Preview Night is Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m.  It takes place at the climbing wall area in the Student Recreation Center.

Preview Night is just a test, a chance to assess yourself physically and mentally in a survivor-style competition.  It’s the opportunity to get a taste, literally, of what the 2011 Ultimate Saluki Challenge is all about.  Exact details are, of course, secret but we can tell you that during preview night, competitors will take part in a three-tiered contest featuring smoothies, puzzles and the climbing wall.

This year’s sixth annual Ultimate Saluki Challenge is set for Oct. 21-23 at Touch of Nature Environmental Center.  The Ultimate Saluki Challenge competition is quite similar to the CBS reality show “Survivor.”  All full-time SIUC students in good academic standing who think they are up to the challenge are welcome to enter.

During the weekend contest they’ll face assorted mental and physical challenges as they fight for prizes and immunity.  Prizes include a book scholarship and much more.  Former contestants say the event was life changing and that it taught them about themselves and teamwork and creates lasting friendships.

Contestants can find applications for the contest at Preview Night or online at www.reccenter.siu.edu.  The deadline to enter is 7 p.m. Oct. 5.
