Media Advisory -- Reception for Andy, Sue Marcec

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover a reception spotlighting a Southern Illinois University Carbondale success story on Thursday, July 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lower level of the Student Recreation Center near the equipment desk.

A Senior Olympics triathlon silver medalist, double alumnus and longtime supporter of the University, Andy Marcec and wife Sue have been members of the Student Recreation Center for a number of years. As the couple prepares to relocate from Carbondale to be closer to family, the Student Recreation Center is hosting the reception honoring the Marcecs and recognizing Andy Marcec’s recovery from a devastating brain injury, along with the role the fitness department and staff played in that recovery.

A fitness devotee, Andy Marcec competed in numerous marathons, including the prestigious ones in Boston and St. Louis, before moving on to compete internationally in triathlons. Marcec is an East St. Louis native who earned an agriculture degree in 1956 at SIUC. He enjoyed a lengthy career in medical continuing education at SIUC and as a physician recruiter for Southern Illinois Healthcare. In addition, he has been extensively involved in community service, including serving on the Brehm Preparatory School board.

All the while, he has maintained his fitness and a healthy lifestyle. But, Marcec fell on the ice in February 2010 and struck his head, resulting in a brain injury requiring surgery and extensive rehabilitation. Shortly after returning home, another fall caused further injury and the necessity for further hospitalization and rehabilitation. But, Marcec returned to the Student Recreation Center and, due to his sheer determination and effort, coupled with the help of staff and facilities, he’s made a remarkable recovery. Media can meet Andy and Sue and learn more of their story at the reception.
