Media Advisory -- Summer Camps
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Summer activities and camps in the coming weeks at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will provide great story opportunities for reporters, photographers and news crews.The Division of Continuing Education hosts a majority of the camps while Touch of Nature Environmental Center and the Student Recreation Center handle a few as well. The schedule for June 19-July 1, accompanied by a brief description of the camp, opportune times to get stories, and contact information for each camp includes:
• Camp Little Giant, with three sessions between June 19 and July 1. Camp Traditions I is June 19-24, Camp Traditions II is June 19-July 1 and Camp Traditions III is June 26-July 1. All three sessions are for adults over 21 years old with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities. • Eco U, June 20-24 at Touch of Nature Environmental Center. Survival 101 is an Eco U camp for kids entering grades 2-7 and is designed to teach campers how Native Americans survive utilizing the land. • Summer Wings Camp II, June 19-24 at the Southern Illinois Airport. This weeklong aviation camp is for students in grades 9-12. Media should contact Steve Goetz at 618/453-9258 to arrange a visit or for more information call the Division of Continuing Education at 618/536-7751.
• TV News Camp, June 19-24 at SIUC. Participants in grades 9-12 will explore the world of TV news and learn how to write, produce, edit and perform “under the lights” as part of a news team. Media are welcome between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday. • Junior High Volleyball Camp, June 19-21 at the SIU Arena. Athletes in grades 6-8 will develop and improve their volleyball skills with Saluki coaches and players. • Challenge to Excellence, June 19-24. This summer camp for grades 8-10 has activities that focus on improving a student’s thinking skills in math, science, creative writing and other content areas. For details about visiting the camp, contact John McIntyre at 618/453-2415.
• Engineering Camp, June 20-22 at the Engineering Building. Youth in grades 6-8 will meet 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to learn about engineering with hands-on activities. • Travel Through Time, June 20-24 at the Student Recreation Center. This session from Dawg Days at the Rec simulates time-travel as campers ages 7-12 participate in fun activities based on life when their parents and ancestors were kids. • Camp Rec, June 20-24 at the Student Recreation Center. This is a half-day afternoon program for children ages 4-6. Campers learn to work together using fitness to develop motor skills. • Beginning Engineering LEGOs Camp, June 20-24 at Quigley Hall. Children in grades 1-2 will be introduced to engineering in this morning camp. Jon Davey, award-winning teacher and project director for the Kid Architecture and LEGO camps, is starting his 30th year of design teaching. • Intermediate Engineering LEGOs Camp, June 20-24 at Quigley Hall. This slightly more advanced engineering camp for children in grades 1-2 meets in the morning and features camp projects such as conveyor belts, motors, and bridges using LEGOs. • Advanced Engineering LEGOs Camp, June 20-24 at Quigley Hall. Campers in grades 3 and up will experience fun and educational sessions of engineering featuring LEGOs. • WeDo Robotics Engineering LEGOs Camp, June 20-24 at Quigley Hall. Students in third grade or older will use LEGO Education WeDo hardware and software to think, create and learn about subjects such as mathematics, literacy, science and social studies. • Young Writers Workshop, June 21-25, primarily at Faner Hall. This program gives students in grades 10-12 the opportunity to explore and develop their writing skills. • Girls Make Movies Camp, June 26-July 1. Campers in grades 9-12 will create stories and learn how to produce video in a fun environment. • Jr. Salukis Boys Basketball Camp, June 27-29 at SIU Arena. This camp is open to young players entering kindergarten through grade 3. The baskets will be lowered and the balls will be slightly smaller to emphasize technique and to give children a basic introduction to the game of basketball. • Beginning Robotics Camp, June 27-30 at the Applied Sciences and Arts Technology Labs. This camp will provide kids ages 11-15 with a basic understanding of electronics and programming. The camp is in session 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday and media are welcome during those times but its preferable you contact Martin Hebel at 618/453-8806 for the best times to visit. • Kid Architecture Day Camp, June 27-July 1 at Quigley Hall. This camp for grades 4-6 is designed to teach young people about the concepts and ideas behind the built environment. • History… Science… = Survival, June 27-July 1 at the Student Recreation Center. This session from Dawg Days at the Rec looks at history and adventures taken by some early explorers and educates campers on survival methods.
