Journalism students capture scholarships, awards

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale presented scholarships and awards to 27 outstanding students in the School of Journalism during a recent ceremony.

Thirty scholarships worth more than $32,000, along with several recognition awards, were presented at the annual awards banquet held last month in the University’s Communications Building. The School of Journalism is within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

Here is a list of scholarship winners, by hometown. Where available, the listing contains the winner’s name, year in school, major, scholarship name, and the amount.

Illinois

Arcola: Sarah Schneider, freshman, news/editorial. Bill Harmon Scholarship, $900.

Bellwood: Karl Bullock, junior, news/editorial. Polly Robinson Memorial Scholarship, $1,500.

Calumet City: Brandon Willingham, sophomore, news/editorial. Harry W. and Helen M. Stonecipher Scholarship.

Carbondale: Brooke Grace, master’s student, photojournalism. James Murphy Memorial Scholarship.

Chicago: Karina Enriquez, junior, advertising. Donald Hileman Memorial Scholarship, $700.

Willie Porter, freshman, advertising. Charles Feirich Memorial Scholarship, $2,000.

Shontae Wilmore, junior, advertising. Southern Illinois Editorial Association Scholarship, $600.
