Softball camps planned for this summer

by Nicole Trainor

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Intercollegiate Athletics and Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Division of Continuing Education are partnering to present two softball camps this summer for girls who want to improve their skills on the field.

The Hitting and Defense Camp will be June 13-15 from 9 a.m. to noon. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. at Sports Blast in Carbondale. Players in grades 3-12 will receive personalized instruction for hitting and bunting and assistance for their defensive positions through station work and drills. Registrations by telephone for Hitting and Defense Camp are due no later than June 10.

Pitching Camp is set for July 6-7 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center on the SIUC campus. Campers from grades 2 to 12 will participate in drill work and receive instruction in specialized pitches. The coach to camper ratio is one to five. Telephone registrations for Pitching Camp are due no later than July 1.

Campers should bring softball or tennis shoes, a glove, sweatpants, batting gloves, sweatshirt, and shorts. Catchers should bring their catching equipment. Camp organizers encourage players to bring their own bats and to make sure all personal belongings clearly bear the name of the owner.

Kerri Blaylock, head coach of Saluki softball, with the help of Jen Sewell, associate head coach, and Erin Glasco, assistant coach, will be instructing the camps this year.

Registration is $80 per camp or $150 for both camps. The fees include instruction, materials, a T-shirt, and limited accident/injury camper medical insurance. Enrollment is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, so campers should sign up early.
