Donations being accepted to help flood victims

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- With floodwaters causing devastation in much of the region, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale community is offering a helping hand.

Baptist Collegiate Ministries, located at 825 W. Mill St. in Carbondale, is now accepting donations to help families from Golconda, Shawneetown, Old Shawneetown, Harrisburg, Carmi, Brookport, Metropolis, Cairo, Karnak, Olive Branch, Thebes, Tamms, New Haven, Junction, Grand Tower and surrounding communities who have lost much due to the floods.

Donations of non-perishable food, basic first aid items, toiletries including shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap for babies and adults, are welcome as are gift cards for retailers including Walmart and Kroger. They request there be no clothing donations.

The Baptist Collegiate Ministries facility, the Baptist Student Center, at the corner of Forest Avenue and Mill Street, will accept donations from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday through Wednesday, May 11.
