Friends of Morris Library collecting books
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Most of us have them -- those stacks of books around the house that we’ve read and no longer want. Here’s your chance to clear the space and help a worthwhile cause.
The Friends of Morris Library at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are now collecting books for their continuous book sale that serves as a fundraiser, helping the group in its mission to assist the library. This year, the book collection has a new site. Since parking at Morris Library can sometimes be a challenge, the collection point is Murdale True Value, located at 1915 W. Main St. in Carbondale, according to Carolyn Donow, a past president of the Friends of Morris Library and chair of the ongoing Honest Abe Book Sale committee.
You can drop off books at the specially marked boxes just inside Murdale True Value any time the store is open. Particularly sought for the sale are books about history (especially military history), cooking, famous people, crafts and gardening along with mysteries, science fiction novels and reference books. Gently used children’s books are welcome and graphic novels, which feature artwork illustrating the narrative, are also increasingly popular. Sale organizers prefer that people not donate textbooks, romantic novels or books about computers, business, health and fitness.
Morris Library visitors are always welcome to stop by the book sale and find new reading treasures.
The Friends of Morris Library utilize proceeds of the sale and other funds they obtain to host receptions, sponsor guest speakers, purchase equipment, contribute to endowments and assist the library and its mission in various other ways. The group formed in 1960 and its most recent project is leading the fundraising and construction of a new patio at the southeast corner of the library. On a pleasant day, you’ll likely see students, faculty, staff and visitors enjoying the patio, complete with historical stones from the early days of SIUC.
