University Housing to recognize volunteers
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Volunteers from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the surrounding community will be the guests of honor at a reception and appreciation breakfast 7:30-10 a.m. on Friday, April 22, in Lentz Hall’s Dining Room #2 on Thompson Point.
More than 150 Faculty University Associates (FUA) and Edutainment volunteers give of their time and energy every year to help students residing in University Housing in a variety of ways, and this event will be an expression of thanks to them. In addition, six people will get special awards recognizing them for a decade of volunteerism on behalf of students.
As Faculty University Associates, faculty and staff from the University serve as mentors for students and help with special programming of all kinds. From welcoming students to campus with cookies to having major events, they are available for students. Edutainment volunteers are members of the community who also do those things as well as hosting Tuesday night educational entertainment sessions for students.
“It’s just a presence that allows students to know we care about them and that we want to do everything we can to improve their time at SIUC,” said Alfred Jackson, programming coordinator for University Housing.
During the reception, awards will go to six Faculty University Associates in appreciation of the dedication and assistance to students for 10 years. Those earning the awards are Jeff Williams, Pat McNeil, Bonnie Bateman, Michelle McLernon, Jose R. Ruiz and Vicki Nelson.
