Two students receive art history scholarships

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Two Southern Illinois University Carbondale students claimed Art History Endowment Scholarships from the University’s School of Art and Design.

Rachael McIndoo (Oakbrook Terrace) and Rebecca Rea (Freeburg) received a total of $3,000 between them to support their undergraduate study of art history.

Peter Chametzky, director of the SIUC School of Art and Design, noted that the scholarship derives from “a very generous contribution by a private donor to the art history program.”

“We strive to provide our students with every opportunity to succeed and become the next generation of interpreters of mankind’s visual and material culture -- past, present and future,” he said.

Recipients of this scholarship are, if upper classmen, declared art history majors, and, if freshmen, taking at least two art history courses during the period covered by the scholarship. Applicants submit transcripts and letters of recommendation. The scholarship is renewable, but renewal is not automatic.

Art history is one of two specializations available as a bachelor’s degree from the School of Art and Design. There are 10 undergraduate specializations available in the bachelor of fine arts program offered through the School of Art and Design, part of the College of Liberal Arts.
