Social Work Day luncheon, awards set for March 7

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The 2011 Social Work Day Luncheon and Awards Ceremony at Southern Illinois University Carbondale celebrates social workers of today and tomorrow.

The School of Social Work in the College of Education and Human Services, in cooperation with the SIUC Division of Continuing Education, is sponsoring the event, set for March 7 in the Student Center’s John Corker Lounge. Check-in is 8:30-9 a.m. with the workshop running from 9 a.m. to noon, and the luncheon and awards set for 12:30-2 p.m.

Jose E. Coll, clinical associate professor and director of the San Diego Academic Center at the University of Southern California, will present the workshop “No One Leaves Unchanged: Insights Into the Military Experience, Culture and Trauma.” The presentation will include a survey and group discussion along with dialogue from Coll.

Coll’s experience as a clinical social worker has included working with adolescents and families of children with autism, the severely emotionally disturbed, and emotionally mentally handicapped. He research focus is primarily on world views and how they influence treatment and clinical outcomes. He also studies the military culture and prevention of suicide among active duty military personnel and family members. A former Marine, he’ll share information about the military culture and system and implications for social work practice.

Award presentation announcements from the School of Social Work set for that day include: Undergraduate and Graduate Students of the Year, Field Instructor of the Year, Social Work Student Alliance Undergraduate Student of the Year, Auerbach Recognition Award, Non-Traditional Student of the Year and Alumni Achievement Award.

Pre-registration is required and the registration form is online at https://www.dce.siu.edu under the banner “conferences.” The registration deadline is Feb. 28. Costs vary depending upon your position and what parts of the event you are attending. Participants are eligible for three continuing education credits.
