'SIUC Fit' program available to faculty, staff

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale faculty and staff can “get fit” during their lunch hours right on campus thanks to Recreational Sports and Services’ “SIUC Fit” program.

There’s an all-new Mind-Body Fusion class, with Barbara Tyler as instructor, on the schedule in 2011. Participants can also enjoy yoga with Maureen Doran or Sarah Miller, cardio with Vicki Busch or weight training with Christina Cannova.

All instructors are trained and certified and can adjust programming to fit fitness levels of participants. Some classes do require participants provide their own yoga mats and/or lightweight hand weights.

The midday stress-buster spring fitness session classes are going on now and continue through the week of March 14-18. Most classes meet in Davies Gym or Pulliam Gym while the new Mind-Body Fusion class meets in the lower level of Grinnell Hall. Classes are typically 12:15 to 1 p.m. although the cardio class meets 11:25 a.m.-12:10 p.m. You can find the complete schedule and details online at www.reccenter.siu.edu.

For $130 you can attend unlimited classes during the semester. Or, you can purchase a flexible-use punch card ranging in price from $30 for 10 punches to $45 for 16 punches to $85 for 30 punches.

The beauty of the card is that you can go to whatever classes you want and two or more people can even share usage of the card, although each time anyone attends a class it counts as a punch. And, if you purchase two or more punch cards at the same time, you’ll get a free weekend admission pass for the Student Recreation Center.
