Free tuba performance is set for Jan. 25

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- What is big and brass and coming to Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall at Southern Illinois University?

Tubas, of course.

Chris Combest, lecturer in tuba and euphonium in the School of Music, presents a tuba recital beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 25.

Joining Combest are School of Music faculty members Ron Coulter, percussion, David Lyons, piano, and Jennifer Presar, horn.

This free performance features compositions by Franz Strauss (1822-1905) and Ralph Vaughn Williams (1872-1958), and contemporary composers James Grant, Michael Horwood and Anthony Plog.

Combest will perform at a trio of conferences early this year, beginning with the United States Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference, held in late January at Fort Myer, Va. Combest will also put in performances at the Great Plains Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in February and at the Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in March. This concert is a local preview of some of those performances.
