Children of SIUC graduates can save on tuition

by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill -- Newly entering students with family ties to Southern Illinois University Carbondale stand to save 20 percent on tuition under a plan approved by the SIU Board of Trustees.

The SIUC Legacy Tuition Rate will apply beginning in fall 2011 to newly entering freshmen or transfer undergraduate students who have parents, stepparents or legal guardians who graduated from SIUC. These students will pay 80 percent of the current applicable in-state or out-of-state tuition, guaranteed for four years. The change excludes professional schools and the physician assistant studies program.

The Board of Trustees approved the measure earlier this month, building on a policy approved in September 2007 that allows the SIU president and chancellors to charge alternative tuition rates for special situations and populations.

Officials at SIUC sought the Legacy Tuition Rate in an effort to increase recruitment of the children of SIUC graduates, thus expanding the overall proportion of such students attending the University.

“This program will continue and enhance our legacy tradition and promote a climate of academic excellence for all students,” Chancellor Rita Cheng said.

Cheng also noted that a considerable number of Illinois’ well-qualified students currently choose to attend out-of-state institutions. The SIUC Legacy Tuition Rate would allow the University to offset that migration by increasing its attractiveness to out-of-state students with such ties to SIUC.

The Legacy Tuition Rate will build further on several recent moves by the Board of Trustees that reduced tuition for certain populations. Starting in fall 2009, the board reduced out-of-state tuition from 2.5 times the in-state rate to the equivalent of in-state tuition for new entering and continuing graduate and undergraduate students from Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Arkansas (excluding professional schools and physician assistant studies.)

Also starting in fall 2009, SIUC’s “Southern Stars” program reduces tuition by 20 percent for new, first-time freshmen from Illinois’ 34 southernmost counties who qualify for the Academic Competitiveness Grant.
