by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Music at Southern Illinois University Carbondale proclaims the beginning of the holiday season in song with a presentation of the “Magnificat.”

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Shryock Auditorium. The SIUC Choral Union and SIUC Concert Choir, with the SIUC Faculty Brass Quintet, welcome special guests soprano Arlene Transue and organist Anita Hutton. Susan Davenport conducts the vocal ensembles, with Carlyn Zimmerman conducting the instrumental ensemble.

The Magnifcat, also known as the Song of Mary, is a canticle with verses pulled from the Gospel of Luke with echoes from the Old Testament. This concert features different settings of this work, from the early Baroque composer Heinrich Schutz to those presented by three different contemporary composers -- Daniel Pinkham, René Clausen and Jonathan Willcocks.

Tickets are $12 for general audience, and $6 for students. Purchase tickets in advance through SouthernTicketsOnline.com or by calling 618/453-6000. Tickets are also available at the Shryock Auditorium Box Office during standard office hours and beginning one hour before the performance.
