Blanket drive will benefit those in need

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- When the cold winter winds hit, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale community wants to make sure that some of the region’s less fortunate folks stay warm.

University Housing is collaborating with the Good Samaritan House to sponsor a blanket drive to help homeless and displaced people in the area this winter. Black collection bins are now in place at Neely Hall, Schneider Hall, Mae Smith Hall, Lentz Hall and University Hall on the SIUC campus, ready to accept blanket donations.

While there’s an emphasis on giving students the opportunity to give something back to the community they’re now living in, the blanket drive is open to all members of the SIUC community including students, faculty, staff and anyone else who would like to help. You can drop off blankets any time until noon Nov. 20 in the bins. Staff at the desks near the entry will direct donors to the bins.

When the collection concludes, Good Samaritan House will distribute the blankets to those in need.
