Flags lowered to honor war casualty

Under a proclamation signed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, the United States flag and the Illinois flag are to be at half-staff at all State of Illinois facilities in honor of a U.S. Army soldier killed last month in the war in Afghanistan.

Flags are to be flown at half-staff until sunset, Wednesday, Nov. 10, in honor of Pfc. Andrew N. Meari.

Reports say that Meari, 21, of Plainfield, was killed Nov. 1, when his unit came under attack with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Meari, an infantryman, was one of two soldiers from Fort Campbell, Ky., to die in the attack.

Meari attended Plainfield South High School and graduated from Port Washington High School in Port Washington, Wis.

He joined the U.S. Army in 2008. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division.
