Fundraiser will benefit breast cancer patients

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Center is hosting its inaugural Bowling 4 Boobs fundraiser to benefit local individuals battling breast cancer.

Bowling 4 Boobs is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Student Center’s Bowling and Billiards. Anyone can participate -- students, faculty, staff and community members. You don’t have to be an expert bowler because it’s all about having a good time while helping others. There is a $20 registration fee for each four-person team, although additional donations are welcome.

All additional donations and 75 percent of the registration fees will go to Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation‘s Women with Hope. The foundation assists breast cancer patients in seven Southern Illinois counties with medical bills, transportation to and from treatments, gas cards, child care, wigs, bras, educational materials and in many other ways.

Teams can register online at www.siucstudentcenter.org or visit the Student Center Bowling and Billiards to sign up and pay the registration fee. Payment of the $20 confirms the team’s registration. The fee covers two games of bowling and shoe rental for all four team members at the event.

Bowlers will compete for all sorts of prizes. The 10 bright pink bowling pins you can now see in the Bowling 4 Boobs window display near Bowling and Billiards are among the prizes for the tourney. There are 19 prizes in all, including a six-foot tall trophy for the outstanding registered student organization, council, or club that makes the largest donation. There are trophies and awards too for the team with the best costume, the competitor bowling the most strikes in a row, and for the man, woman and child with the highest cumulative score for the two games.

Participants will also want to check out a special display during Bowling 4 Boobs. From the recent “Be My Bra” contest, the display will feature decorated bras and the accompanying narratives regarding the impact of breast cancer on the creators.

Those unable to attend Bowling for Boobs or just wanting to offer their support in another way can purchase a pink ribbon for just $1 at the Student Center. The goal is to sell enough ribbons to cover completely the east and west walls by the bowling lanes. You can personalize your ribbon before you hang it by writing on it a name in remembrance or the name of a cancer survivor.
