by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- It is Halloween time at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Student Center and that means all kinds of special bewitching fun on Friday, Oct. 29.

The Craft Shop is calling all faculty, staff and students for its big costume contest. Simply stop by the Craft Shop, on the lower level of the Student Center, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. wearing your costume.

The best student costume and the best faculty/staff costume will each win a $25 Student Center gift card. Second prize in each category covers participation in a Craft Shop workshop at no charge, other than the cost of materials. Costumes must be original, creative, and identifiable. The announcement of contest winners will be at 3:30 p.m.

The campus and surrounding community members can also participate in numerous other activities at the Craft Shop that day from noon until 4:30 p.m. The fun includes free face painting and make-up. Or, for just $3 you can make wax hands or paint a wooden pumpkin. You can also create a personalized Halloween “monster” card for $1 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The free face painting and other workshops are available again on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you’ve waited until the last minute to come up with a costume or need a little help, the Craft Shop is also offering Halloween Costume Sewing Basics. Call ahead at 618/453-3636 for an appointment.

Bowling and Billiards is offering cosmic bowling 6-10 p.m. on Oct. 29 with student rates of $2 per game and a $1 charge for shoe rental.

The Market Place is offering an assortment of spooky taste treats as well on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu includes honey barbecue bat wings (chicken wings), werewolf ribs (babyback ribs), buttered roasted eyeballs (new potatoes), goblin fingers (baby carrots) and steamed tentacles (green beans).
