‘Saluki Shore’ is theme for Homecoming 2010

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Think beach and boardwalk, sun and fun, and celebrating homecoming as only Salukis can. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Homecoming 2010 festivities run Oct. 4 to 10 with dozens of exciting events. Saluki Shore is the theme and this year also marks a big reunion for all of the former fraternity and sorority members who spent their Greek years at SIUC.

The festivities include social events, movies, a comedy show, a patio dedication, tours, volleyball, court elections, special museum events and display, music and concerts, and of course, the homecoming parade and football game. The grand marshals this year are James W. “Jim” Hart and wife Mary. An Evanston native, Hart played Saluki football prior to his 19-year pro career with all but one year with the former St. Louis Cardinals.

As quarterback at SIUC, he passed for well over 3,700 yards and scored 34 touchdowns. As a Cardinal, he won a number of honors, played several times in the Pro Bowl and led his team to consecutive division titles in the mid-1970s. A 1998 inductee into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Hart returned to his alma mater as athletics director in the 1990s.
