Families can take advantage of ‘School Daze Off’

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Looking for a fun alternative for your kids when their school isn’t in session?

The Student Recreation Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is sponsoring a series of “School Daze Off” youth programs for youngsters in first through eighth grades. Each of the three camp sessions features theme-related activities including sports, crafts, games and learning opportunities. Kids can even enjoy a dip in the facility’s pool.

Here’s the schedule for the fall School Daze Off sessions:

• Sept. 17, half day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early drop off is at 10:30 a.m. and late pick up is at 4:30 p.m.

• Oct. 8, full day, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

• Nov. 24, full day, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

For each of the full day sessions, the early drop-off time is 7:30 a.m. and the late pick-up time is 4:30 p.m. Bring children to the small gymnasium and pick them up there too. Participants should bring a lunch, swimsuit and a towel. The Student Recreation Center provides snacks.

The cost is $25 for recreation center members or $40 for non-members for the Sept. 17 program. It is $35 for members and $50 for non-members for the Oct. 8 and Nov. 24 sessions.

To sign children up to participate in School Daze Off, visit the Student Recreation Center administrative office or call the office at 618/453-1265 to register with a credit card or to get more information. The registration deadlines for the programs are: Monday, Sept. 13 for the Sept. 17 half-day program, Oct. 4 for the Oct. 8 all-day program and Nov. 19 for the Nov. 24 full-day program. Space is limited so registration is first come, first served.
