SIUC to offer ballroom dance classes this fall

by Ashley McRaven

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Do you ever go to parties, weddings, or dinner dances and wish you had the confidence to get up and dance? Are you looking for new and exciting ways to exercise or socialize?

If so, the Division of Continuing Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has what you’re looking for. This fall, DCE will once again offer ballroom dancing courses for individuals who wish to learn a variety of steps featured in the six most popular ballroom dances.

Ballroom Dancing Level 1 gives beginners and veteran dancers alike a quick introduction to the basic steps of the waltz, tango, foxtrot, rumba, cha cha and swing. Lessons include instruction in lead-follow and good dance technique. For those who have learned the basics, the Level 2 course will expand on the Level 1 course instruction and teach advanced techniques used in ballroom dance.

Two six-week sessions of classes for each proficiency level are set for this fall. Session I of each course is on Tuesdays from Aug. 24 through Sept. 28. Session II is scheduled for Tuesdays from Oct. 5 through Nov. 16 (with no class on Nov. 9.)

Level 2 classes meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the Level 1 classes from 7:30 to 9 p.m. All classes meet in Room 116 at the Carbondale Civic Center.

Registration is $30 per participant for each six-week session and organizers strongly recommend advance registration. To register, or for more information, contact the Division of Continuing Education at 618/536-7751 or visit the website at https://www.dce.siu.edu/.
