RSS honors student employees Walker, Schaber
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Michael Walker of Pekin and Travis Robert Schaber of Steeleville are recent recipients of Student Employee of the Month awards from Recreational Sports and Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Walker is a 2010 graduate in architecture. An RSS student employee since August 2007, he has manned the equipment desk and tennis courts. Colleagues praise Walker’s outgoing personality and say he relates well to all those he comes in contact with.
“Michael has outstanding leadership when it comes to customer service. He consistently brightens the day of patrons at the Student Recreation Center by his willingness to help others. Michael is an outstanding employee,” said Dustin Soderman, graduate assistant for facilities at Recreational Sports and Services.
The son of William and Susan Walker, Michael plans to attend SIUC graduate school in architecture. His career plans are to work at PSA- Dewberry, a firm where he has interned during summer breaks since 2006. The architectural and engineering firm has offices across the country, including three in Illinois.
Schaber is also a May graduate of SIUC with a bachelor’s in marketing. For about three years, Schaber has been an intramural sports supervisor and referee at RSS. Co-workers say he has been a good mentor and an asset to the staff.
“Travis is a mentor to our first-year supervisors as well as our officials. He has been one of our best evaluators providing feedback and encouragement to our young basketball officials. He has embraced the task of supervising our sports clubs in Davies Gym and thereby has a new appreciation for badminton,” said Shane M. Bennett, assistant director of intramural sports and sport clubs for RSS.
Travis is the son of Alice Wydeck and Robert Schaber.
Recreational Sports and Services presents the Employee of the Month awards in recognition of outstanding effort and service by student employees. Schaber and Walker earned the award for February.
