Cinema and Photography students honored

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Twenty-two outstanding students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Department of Cinema and Photography recently earned scholarships and received awards for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The department is within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. The scholarships and awards total $8,500.

Here is a list of scholarship winners, by hometown. Where available, the listing contains the winner’s name, year in school, major, scholarship name, the amount, and a bit of background on the award.

Illinois

Cary: Travis Past, senior, cinema, production. Liz Ralston Cinema Production Award, $250. Established by SIUC cinema alumnus Liz Ralston, the award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for innovation accomplishment in the past year.

Chicago: James Redmond, senior, cinema. Minority Filmmaker Award, $250. The award goes to an outstanding minority student in advanced courses in the cinema program to cover the costs of filmmaking.

Columbia: Darren Schroeder, senior, fine art and documentary. David Gilmore Award, $250. The award goes to an outstanding photography student in the past year, and honors David Gilmore, who taught in the department for 31 years.

Champaign: Danielle Meador, senior, photography, fine art. Mary Greene Memorial Award, $100. The award honors Mary Greene, a department alumna, and goes to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography.

East St. Louis: De’Angelo N. Williams, senior, cinema, screenwriting. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $250. The award goes to outstanding cinema production students for their work in the past year, and honors the professor and founder of the University’s cinema program.

Effingham: Dylan J. Murphy, senior, photography. Kodak Professional Imaging Award, $1,000. Presented to an outstanding undergraduate student based on academic and professional excellence in the past year.

Eldorado: Niegel Doerge, senior, photography, documentary and fine art. Paul Harum Memorial Award, $250. Established in honor of Paul Harum, who was a photography student at SIUC. The award goes to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in the past year.

Elmhurst: Alexa R. Nutile, senior, cinema studies and production. Cinema Production Award, $250. The award goes to a student with a film project currently under way.

Lake Barrington: Madelyn M. Kime, senior, photography, fashion and narrative. Kodak Professional Imaging Award, $1,000.

Marion: Matthew S. Jones, cinema, graduated May 2009. Blumenberg Screenwriting Award, 2009, $1,000.

New Windsor: Blossom Hock-Roberts, senior, photography. C. William Horrell Memorial Award, $250. The award honors C. William Horrell, long-time faculty member and photography program founder. Presented to an outstanding undergraduate student for accomplishment in documentary photography and/or photojournalism in the past year.

Ottawa: Richard Leipold, senior, cinema. Photography Outstanding Scholar Award, $250. Established to promote scholarly studies in area of photography history, theory and criticism.

Peoria: Joe Thomas, senior, cinema. Cinema Outstanding Scholar Award, $250. The award goes to a cinema student for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the past year.

Rockford: Kyle Ragaller, senior, cinema, cinematography. Robert Dennis Filmmaking Award, $1,000. The award is given to a student in the area of cinematography whose work is judged an outstanding expression of vision through the use of light.

Roscoe: Danielle N. Williamson, junior, cinema, production. Cinema & Photography Department Service Award, $250.

Springfield: Wade Morrison, junior, cinema, narrative production. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $250.

Troy: Melissa Coleman, master’s degree student, documentary filmmaking. Minority Filmmaker Award, $250.

Waukegan: Andrea Moore, senior, photography. David Gilmore Award, $250.

Washington

Edgewood: Christopher Nash, senior, photography. Charles Swedlund Award, $250. Established in honor of former professor Charles Swedlund, who taught at SIUC for 29 years. The award goes to an outstanding photography student.

Stanwood: Ashley Anderson, sophomore, photography. Photography Production Award, $250. The award goes to an outstanding undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography in the past year.

Japan

Imizu, Toyama: Eriko Ami, senior, cinema, animation. Loren Cocking Animation Award, $250. Established in honor of Loren Cocking, who taught film production and animation courses at the University from 1976 through 2002, the award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for accomplishment in animation the past year.

Spain

Benajarafe, Malanga: Estefiane Martinez, master’s degree student, cinema, animation, Loren Cocking Animation Award, $250.
