Housing assistant, program win regional honors
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A student leader and a special program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale earned regional recognition in the final quarter of 2009.
Sarah Nicole Hubbs and Balloon Bonanza earned accolades from the National Residence Hall Honorary, the nationwide recognition branch of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls. The NRHH’s “Of the Month” program encourages those on university campuses to write nominations each month recognizing noteworthy individuals and programs in a number of categories.
The Saluki Chapter of NRHH chooses campus winners from those nominations. They advance to the regional level where a group of student executives selects regional winners. The winners then vie for national competition honors. Award certificates at each level recognize leaders and programs and the impact they have on residential life during any given month.
During the fall 2009 semester, there were two regional winners from SIUC. Hubbs was the October Resident Assistant of the Month for the Great Lakes Region while the Balloon Bonanza, a December event from the Mae Smith Hall Council, was the Social Program of the Month for December. SIUC is part of the Great Lakes Region that includes institutions of higher learning in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and part of Canada.
Hubbs, of Mahomet, is a junior advertising and integrated marketing communication major. The daughter of David and Karen Hubbs, her plans call for graduating in May 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, specializing in advertising and then to pursue her MBA. Her goal is to work in account services for a social media agency.
She is a community assistant at Wall and Grand Apartments. In addition, she is an advertising sales representative for The Daily Egyptian, the SIUC student newspaper.
The balloon bonanza was a Mae Smith Hall Council event to help alleviate a bit of stress for students near the end of the semester.
