Performance features musical improvisation

by Andrea Hahn

The School of Music at Southern Illinois University Carbondale presents a Manifesto of Improvisation in a free musical performance.

Ron Coulter, percussion lecturer in the School of Music, brings the latest installment of his Southern Illinois Improvisation Series (SiiS) to Altgeld Hall, Room, 112.  The musical event is Sunday, Jan. 31, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Coulter describes percussion as the “catch-all of the music world,” which partly explains the impressive variety of instruments and items that are used as instruments that pepper the stage at any given SiiS performance.  Coulter devotes many of his musical endeavors to improvisation, partly because percussion is given to improvisation (as he explains it) and partly because musical improvisation suits him.  With SiiS, he refers to himself as a “facilitator” for the musical experience.

This event is the 25th in the improvisation series.
