Scholarships presented to aviation students
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Fourteen students enrolled in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s aviation programs received scholarships during the recent fall aviation banquet.
The Aviation Management Society, an SIUC registered student organization, sponsors the banquet. Some of the scholarships honor SIUC graduates and all support students enrolled in the aviation management, aviation flight and aviation technologies programs.
The aviation programs are part of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Students received $29,000 in scholarships during the Nov. 6 “Aviation in the Future” banquet in the Student Center. Lisa Piccione, senior vice president of government affairs with the National Business Aviation Administration, delivered the keynote address to about 200 people.
The scholarships total represents one of the largest ever presented to students at one banquet, said David NewMyer, chair of the Department of Aviation Management and Flight.
“This is reflective of strong academics and excellent students at SIUC aviation,” he said. “It was great to have an industry leader like Lisa Piccione here from NBAA, and especially nice to have her present scholarships to SIUC aviation students.”
Next year’s banquet is set for Friday, Nov. 5, in the Student Center.
Scholarship winners by hometown are:
Illinois
- Bloomington: Bradley L. Mertes, senior in animal science and aviation flight, Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $2,000. Mertes is the son of Larry and Christine Mertes.
- Broadlands: Jordan A. Wells, junior in aviation flight, Matthew K. Meier “Faith, Family, Friendship, Fortitude, Future” Aviation Management Scholarship, $1,500. Wells is the son of Randy and Marcee Wells.
- Carbondale: Shannon W. Roth, senior in aviation management, National Business Aviation Association Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship, $5,000; Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $1,000. Roth is the daughter of Kevin Roth, formerly of Springfield.
- Chicago: Marc L. Chyba, senior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $1,000. Chyba is the son of Lawrence and Mary Lynn Chyba.
- Crystal Lake: Christopher A. Fischer, junior in aviation flight, Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $1,000. Fischer is the son of Alfred and Susan Fischer.
- Industry: Kevin D. Dummer, senior in aviation management, William S. Arnott Scholarship, awarded by the United Airlines Historical Foundation, $1,000. Dummer is the son of Sandy Dummer and Robert Dummer.
- Lemont: Ryan E. Buttney, junior in aviation flight, Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $1,000. Buttney is the son of John and Catherine Buttney.
- Monee: Daniel S. Harrington, sophomore in aviation management, James & Helen Newby Aviation Scholarship, $2,000; Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $1,000. Harrington is the son of Nancy L. Curry and Daniel J. Harrington.
- O’Fallon: Geoffrey S. Kinney, senior in aviation flight, George Priester Memorial Aviation Scholarship, $3,000. Kinney is the son of Rory and Cheryl Kinney.
- Pawnee: Heather N. Heidinger, senior with degree in aviation technologies, Joseph A. Messina, II, Aviation Explorers Scholarship, $2,500. Heidinger is the daughter of Judy Heidinger.
- Spring Grove: Trevor L. Sipe, senior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship, $4,000. Sipe is the son of Patrick and Tammy Sipe.
