Radio-television students win statewide honors
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Current and former students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Department of Radio-Television fared well in the 2009 Illinois Broadcasters Association Student Silver Dome Awards.
Students earned four first-place finishes, two second-place awards, and a third-place award. In addition, the River Region Evening Edition News Team earned second place for Best Television Newscast for its April 15, 2009 broadcast.
“We are very proud of our radio-television students and their accomplishments at the IBA Student Silver Dome Awards this year,” said Lisa Brooten, associate professor and interim chair. “This was an especially fruitful year, but these newest awards are just the latest in a continuing pattern of excellence by news and management and marketing students that reflects the quality of the education they are receiving here in the Department of Radio-Television.”
The Student Silver Dome Awards competition is open to all IBA member colleges and universities in Illinois, said Joey Helleny, a senior lecturer in radio-television. Students received the awards at the annual IBA-U Academics Day at Illinois State University on Oct. 2.
“We are always thrilled when student work is recognized beyond the campus,” he said. “The competition among colleges and universities in Illinois can be tough.
“The Illinois Broadcasters Association does a great job of supporting broadcast education with this competition, as well as scholarships, seminars, intern opportunities, and grants for our summer camps. Staying connected to our industry partners helps keep what we are doing in the classroom both relevant and up-to-date.”
The IBA “is one of the few professional organizations that recognize student accomplishments in radio and television not only for creative work in video and audio, but also for outstanding achievement within the business side of our industry,” said James Wall, a senior lecturer in radio-television.
The sales and promotional winning entries were the result of a semester-long term project in two of Wall’s classes within the marketing and management sequence in the department -- electronic media sales and electronic media promotion, Wall said. Many former students have used their projects from these classes to obtain jobs, he said.
“To me, that is the ultimate final exam,” Wall said.
