by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Recreation Center will host a pair of Aerobics and Fitness Association of America events in early October.

The primary group exercise instructor certification class is Oct. 3, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. This program includes a review of AFAA’s basic exercise standards and guidelines, anatomy, exercise science, exercise evaluation and exam criteria. Essentially, it’s a study session for fitness instructors, wrapping up with the written and practical certification exams.

The cost is $224.25 for University employees and AFAA members and $299 for everyone else. Pre-registration is required as is pre-study. The course provides five continuing education units.

There also is a resistance training workshop 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Oct. 4, at the Student Recreation Center. The workshop provides instruction on creative and effective strength training options that don’t require a weight room. Aerobics instructors and personal trainers will find it particularly helpful.

The cost is $96.75 for SIUC employees and AFAA members and $129 for all others. Participants can acquire five continuing education units.

People may attend either workshop individually or both. Participants receive a variety of written materials and other benefits along with the classroom instruction.
