by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Recreational Sports and Services will welcome Southern Illinois University Carbondale students to campus at the big Res 2 Rec festival set for Sunday, Aug. 30. Previously called Sports Fest, Res 2 Rec offers hours of free activity indoors and out.

It all kicks off at 2 p.m. on Sam Rinella Field near Brush Towers. There will be four hours of fun featuring athletic games and contests, including bags, kickball, Whiffleball, grass volleyball and more. There also will be a big cookout, featuring a variety of meats and vegetarian options. A WCIL radio live remote will be on site.

The action moves indoors to the Student Recreation Center at 6 p.m. It’s your chance to check out the instructional programming, intramural sports leagues tournaments, sports clubs, fitness facilities, sport shop and everything else Recreational Sports and Services offers. You can even get a therapeutic massage.

The finale of the festival is the dive-in movie at 9 p.m. Come to the center’s pool and while floating or sitting poolside, enjoy a free showing of the comedy “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.”

“Res 2 Rec is a wonderful event. We just want students to come out and have fun -- they live together and they play together,” said Shane Bennett, assistant director of intramural sports and sport clubs for RSS.

The Student Recreation Center is home to aquatic programs, Adaptive and Inclusive Recreational opportunities for special populations, classes in everything from martial arts to dance and beyond, group and personal fitness classes, club and intramural sports options, and much more. The RSS umbrella also covers outdoor facilities including campus lake, campus beach, campus boat dock and the lighted tennis courts.
