SIUC’s 43rd annual field day set for July 9

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s 43rd annual field day will take place Thursday, July 9, at its Belleville Research Center on Illinois Route 161.

Early arrivers will hear an 8 a.m. presentation by hydrologist Jon Schoonover from the College of Agricultural Sciences’ Department of Forestry on regional watershed management.

Dean Gary L. Minish will announce this year’s winner of the George Kapusta endowed assistantship for graduate students before the regular program begins at 9 a.m. SIUC experts Jason P. Bond, Stella K. Kantartzi and Bryan G. Young will talk about performance and consistency in seed treatments, crops developed by present-day public plant breeders and the reasons weeds often outperform plants.

Guest speakers from the University of Illinois include agricultural economist Darrel L. Good, who will talk about near-term grain price prospects and soil fertility specialist Stephen A. Ebelhar, who will talk about nitrogen management in wheat. Weed scientist Tom Mueller from the University of Tennessee will discuss how to get the most from residual herbicides.

Organizers have applied for 3.5 units of continuing education credit for the field day.

A free lunch will be served at noon.
