Thompson Woods to re-open on Wednesday

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Thompson Woods, closed since the devastating May 8 storm, will re-open on Wednesday, June 17.

Philip S. Gatton, director of Plant and Service Operations, said that while the main walking paths will be open, pedestrians may encounter some asphalt work as crews continue repairs to areas damaged in the storm.

The campus lake boat dock will re-open in the next few days. Gatton anticipates the beach and walking path around the lake will re-open perhaps during the second week of July. As is the case in Thompson Woods, once crews finish clearing debris along the walking path, Gatton expects there will have to be asphalt repair work in some areas.

“Our focus has been, and remains, keeping the campus safe for everyone,” Gatton said of the ongoing cleanup and repair efforts.

The University sustained estimated insured losses totaling $6 million. That figure includes the anticipated $1 million cost of debris cleanup.
