Media Advisory -- Fisheries Demonstration

Students at Unity Point School will enjoy a variety of aquatic demonstrations on Friday, May 22, courtesy of the Fisheries and Illinois Aquaculture Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to attend the event at the school, located at 4033 Illinois Ave., just south of Carbondale. The action is set from 10 a.m. to noon on the rear parking lot.

Graduate students and staff from the center will talk with children in kindergarten through fifth grades and demonstrate various fisheries equipment. The kids will view a shovelnose boat and learn what the center does, and how it works with regulators to assure that there are fish to catch in public bodies of water. They will see an aquarium stocked with local fish and observe how trap nets and gill nets work. Prior to the demonstration, workers and students from the center will pull a seine through campus lake, capturing bugs and other organisms the fish eat so the Unity Point students can view these tiny creatures through microscopes.
