Theater students honored for achievements

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Theater students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently received scholarships and awards for their achievements in theater generally or for their specific theater focus.

Some of the specific area scholarships and awards are:

• Award for Excellence in Performance -- Aaron Clark (Carbondale).

• Award for Excellence in Technical Production -- Nathan Coon (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Kirsten Allegra Tussing-Palm (Normal). In addition, Tussing-Palm earned the Archibald McLeod Award for Academic Excellence.

• James L. Moody Award for Excellence in Lighting Design -- Michael Frohling (Makanda).

Racquel McKenzie (Chicago) earned the Ira Aldridge/Shirlene Holmes Award, given to a black American theater major who best demonstrates theater artistry, academic promise and leadership ability.

The Christian H. Moe Playwriting Awards went to:

• David Clark (Carbondale) -- Best Long Play

• Nicholas Zaunbrecher (Baton Rouge, La.) -- Best Long Play, Honorable Mention

• Jeff Nichols (Carbondale) -- Best Short Play

• Matt Roberts (Chicago) -- Best Short Play, Honorable Mention

David Schneider (Carbondale) received the award for Outstanding Graduate Student in Theater, while Racquel McKenzie and Ellen Conn (Carbondale) received awards for Outstanding Service in Theater.

The Verizon Theater Scholarship, given to outstanding theater students, went to Yen Vi Ho (Urbana) and Steve Looten (Quincy).

The following students received Department of Theater Tuition Waiver Scholarships:
